Sweep frequency response test is a highly reliable and sensitive method or tool for monitoring the physical condition of transformer windings. Transformer windings can be subjected to mechanical stress, severe short circuit faults, transient switching pulses, and lightning strikes during transportation. These mechanical stresses can cause transformer windings to move out of position or deform these windings. In extreme cases, the windings can collapse, and this physical defect can eventually lead to insulation failure or insulation failure in the windings. Sweep frequency response test or sweep frequency response test for short can effectively detect transformer core displacement, winding deformation and displacement, core ground fault, winding part collapse, clip connection broken or loose, short circuit between turns, broken wire, etc.

Major utilities and service companies have used the sweep frequency response test method for more than a decade. The measurement is easy to perform and will capture a unique fingerprint of the transformer. The measurement is compared to a reference fingerprint and gives a direct answer if the mechanical parts of the transformer are unchanged or not. Deviations indicate geometrical and/or electrical changes within the transformer.

The key takeaway is that for swept frequency response analysis results to be truly useful over the life of a transformer or other asset, sweep frequency response testing should be performed using the same test setup every time. If for some reason they cannot be the same, the difference in settings should be clearly noted in the test record.
