How do you check winding resistance?

2023-11-20

A multimeter is required to measure the winding resistance of an electrical component, such as a transformer or motor. The actions to take are as follows:

Switch off the power supply to the part that has to be tested.

Select the resistance (ohms) mode on the multimeter.

Determine the three wires that link to the windings while testing a motor or other three-phase component. There will be two cables for components that are single-phase.

The two or three wire ends that connect to the windings should be connected to the multimeter leads. Which lead connecting to which cable is irrelevant.

Take note of the multimeter's resistance measurement. This represents the windings' resistance value.

Make a comparison between the resistance value listed on the manufacturer's data sheet and the value you have received. The windings are in good condition if the value falls within the prescribed range. The windings can be defective or damaged if it is higher or lower.

Apply the same procedure to every winding.

In order to prevent damage or injury, always turn off the power before testing and handle the component with caution.
